Before Reading a Book
Read title & predict what the book could be about .
Take a picture walk to preview story line & narrow down choices of tricky words .
Help your child use the pictures to think about what word will make sense and match the pictures.
During Reading
Read with expression by noticing punctuation marks.
Listen to yourself so that everything you read makes sense, sounds right and matches the print.
Confirm or change your predictions as you learn more information
Stop at tricky words & tap, scoop, & re-read the sentence to understand.
If tapping out word does not help, tap out a few sounds & read on to the end of the sentence. Think about what word makes sense in that spot with those sounds.
After Reading
Re-tell the beginning, middle and end of the story in sequence. Have your child try to retell the story without looking at the pictures, but if they need the picture support at first, that's OK. With retell practice, your child's memory will improve.
Talk to your child about their favorite part & ask for a reason why.
Talk about what this story makes your child think of in their life. That's called a self to text connection.
Talk to your child about other books this story makes them think of. That's called a text to text conection.

Repeated Reading
Read the same book more than once in the same week.
Repeated readings will also develop better fluency, phrasing, intonation and expression in your child's oral reading.
Choral Reading
You and your child read the same text aloud together.
Choral reading helps your child develop good fluency and develops good phrasing, intonation and expression.
Partner Reading
You and your child take turns reading.
Start by reading one sentence and asking your child to read the next sentence.
As your child's fluency improves, you read a page & he/she reads a page.
Echo Reading
You read one line and your child reads the same line after you. Increase the number of lines you read at one time as the child's reading improves.
To be sure your child is looking at the words, ask him/her to follow the print with a finger.
